The ACT and Phi Beta Sigma Partnership connects purpose with potential to help shape futures. For two graduates of Historically Black Colleges and Universities, the mix of strong family support, academic excellence, and a deep commitment to uplifting the community fueled their determination to pursue their dreams.
Their stories offer inspiration for anyone dedicated to preparing the next generation, whether it’s guiding students in a classroom, supporting a child at home, championing equity, or building a workforce that values talent, resilience, and possibility.
Vanderbilt Thompson, inspired by his aunt and uncle, both Grambling State University alumni, decided to pursue his postsecondary education at their alma mater. There, he ambitiously earned an MD and an MBS. But the road there wasn’t a direct one.
One important aspect of Thompson’s postsecondary journey was the ACT test. “It was a steppingstone that pushed me to be prepared for college testing and kept me on my toes,” he recalls. His preparation included practice tests, Quizlet flashcards, and a reliable study partner, strategies that taught him discipline and collaboration. While his ACT score didn’t immediately open every door, it highlighted academic areas where he could improve and fostered perseverance. This led Thompson to enroll in community college courses to strengthen his foundation before transitioning to a full-time university course load.
Another pivotal part of his journey included becoming a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. Embracing the organization’s ideals of scholarship and service, Thompson’s membership in the fraternity fueled his commitment to advancing educational opportunities for all, a cause he had long felt passionate about.
Never deviating from his goals, his proudest moment was seeing his name on the graduation list at Grambling State University in 2023. “All my hard work, blood, sweat, and tears was worth it,” he says.
For Ethan McLean, a graduate of North Carolina A&T State University, curiosity and preparation were the keys to pursuing extraordinary opportunities. An ACT test-taker and proud member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., McLean earned his bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering and plans to pursue an advanced degree in aerospace engineering.
Taking the ACT was also an essential part of his postsecondary journey. Before achieving his educational milestones, McLean dedicated himself to mastering the ACT test through self-guided practice materials, reviewing incorrect answers, and understanding the “why” behind each concept. His diligence paid off with a full-ride scholarship to North Carolina A&T.
Now, through his fraternity’s literacy initiatives, he advocates for accessible test prep and raises awareness about literacy rates, empowering the next generation of leaders. McLean’s message to future scholars is clear: “Recognize that opportunity should never be limited by zip code or income.”
Both Thompson and McLean exemplify how preparation, perseverance, and purpose can transform lives. Their stories highlight the critical role of intentional study habits, dedication, and community engagement in shaping success. As proud members of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, who advocate for equal access to education for all students, they share the following advice:
Educators: Let your classroom be the place where curiosity is sparked and resilience is strengthened.
Parents and families: Encouragement at home plants the seeds of confidence that carry students farther than they imagine.
Advocates and influencers: Access isn’t a concept; it’s a commitment to removing barriers one opportunity at a time.
Employers: Consider that persistence and adaptability aren’t just essential skills; they’re the foundation of tomorrow’s strongest workforce.
These individuals exemplify the significance of purpose, resilience, and commitment in achieving success not only for themselves but also for their communities.
